NBA Discussion / Liquipel. Waterproofing cell phones.

www.Liquipel.com

What do you think?

I see the company says this:

Disclaimer: Liquipel applies a preventative coating designed to aid in the event of accidental liquid exposure, and assumes no responsibility for water damaged devices. Liquipel does not recommend your device ever come in contact with liquid.

While also saying this:
Liquipel?s Watersafe technology provides protection against 80% of all liquid damage scenarios without the use of a case. Accidental spills, splashes and brief shallow submersion is no longer a threat to your electronic devices. Liquipel?s application gives you a sense of security like never before protecting the stored memories, data, and connectivity you value most.

Apple and Samsung Could Be Dethroned by Asus' Radical New Device

When it comes to the U.S. smartphone market, it's mostly a two-horse race. Cumulatively, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) and Samsung (NASDAQOTH: SSNLF ) sell two out of every three smartphones, with smaller manufacturers such as HTC and Motorola fighting for what's left.

But that could change next year, when Asus brings its PadFone to the United States. The device, powered by Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG ) Android, is particularly revolutionary and has the potential to disrupt the mobile market.

Asus' PadFone combines a tablet with a smartphone
The term "phablet" has arisen to define phones such as Samsung's Galaxy Note III -- too small to be a tablet, yet too large to be a smartphone: a hybrid of form factors. But Asus' PadFone might be the ultimate phablet: Buyers get both a tablet and smartphone, but none of the trade-offs that traditional phablets entail.

Normally, the PadFone Infinity is a standard, 5-inch smartphone running Google's Android. It has a high-end processor and 13-megapixel camera. In other words, it's largely indistinguishable from many other Android smartphones. But it has one huge advantage over its competitors -- a proprietary dock.

The PadFone Infinity comes with a 10.1-inch touchscreen dock. By inserting the phone into the dock, owners can transform their 5-inch smartphone into a 10.1-inch Android tablet. Take it out of the dock, and you're back to a standard smartphone.

Google would benefit from the emergence of another Android player
Buyers of the PadFone Infinity are basically getting two devices in one. Instead of buying Samsung's Galaxy S4 and a Galaxy Note 10.1 or Apple's iPhone 5s and full-size iPad, consumers can simply get Asus' PadFone. Pricing for the PadFone in the U.S. has not yet been announced, but as long as carriers continue to subsidize handsets, it could be more cost effective for consumers to buy a PadFone instead of two separate devices.

The rise of Asus as a major Android OEM would be great for Google, as the company has reportedly grown uneasy with Samsung's dominance. About two-thirds of all smartphones running Google's mobile operating system are made by Samsung, and Samsung is now starting to steer Android for its own benefit.

Samsung held its first developers conference back in October, where it encouraged Android developers to customize their apps for its hardware; meanwhile, Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch forces owners to use Samsung's app store in place of Google Play.

It's not hard to see why Samsung would do this -- it's pretty easy to make the jump from a Samsung device to another handset running Google's operating system: Anything purchased through Google Play (apps, books, music) easily carries over, while the basic functionality is largely unchanged.

Could the PadFone Threaten Apple?
Apple doesn't have to worry about this: If consumers need iOS, they have no choice but to go with an Apple-made handset. Apple customers are notoriously loyal, possibly because of these lock-in effects -- transferring apps, music, and books purchased through iTunes to Android is difficult or impossible.

But if Asus' PadFone catches it on, it could still take its toll on Apple in other ways. For instance, there is some evidence to suggest that a chunk of Apple iPad owners use smartphones powered by Google's operating system: InfoScout reports that, on Black Friday, 40% of iPad purchases went to Android smartphone users.

But if their Android smartphone also doubles as their tablet, Android owners might have little incentive to buy that Apple-made iPad. Moreover, if the PadFone concept catches on, even some Apple diehards might be enticed to make the switch -- as larger-screen Android smartphones may have attracted some iPhone buyers, so may the savings of a two-in-one device.

A hybrid device that actually makes sense
It's too early to say whether the PadFone will be a hit in the U.S. -- but if priced appropriately, I could definitely see it catching on. Microsoft has been widely criticized for attempting to create a hybrid desktop/tablet with Windows 8, but the hybrid of a tablet/smartphone actually makes sense -- for the most part, Apple's iPhone only differs from its iPad in terms of screen size.

If Asus does find success, it could be a hinderance to Samsung, which has risen to dominate Android -- more competition for Samsung, however, is beneficial to Google. Apple's monopoly of iOS should help it to retain most of its customers, but it could lose some iPad sales, and a few Apple faithful might even make the switch.

Asus' PadFone could be the most significant smartphone released in U.S. next year; investors in the space should definitely keep an eye on it.

NBA Discussion / Unlocking cell phones
« on: December 16, 2013, 02:33:18 PM »
Bods, Laker Fan, WayOutWest,

If any of you are still around, what is the goods on unlocking cell phones.
I don't want an Apple 5s 64GM iPhone, however i can get one at what I'm told is a steal at $399.
Ok great, can i give it away or hawk it on ebay?
It would need to be unlocked.

Or, since it's part of an ATT deal, could i give it away or sell it to someone who in turn has or would get an ATT plan?
ATT customer service is holding the company line that they will not unlock it until a contract is over.  I did not ask about if another ATT person obtains the phone.

Person tells me these little stores in the mall will unlock it for 20 bucks but i dunno.....
I'm told Congress just accepted a payoff to make unlocking illegal for the near future.
The scam phone corporations are allegedly working on a plan to agree to unlock each others, but I'm sure that will be only after they have soaked a customer for two years of service.

From a purely tech standpoint, can they be unlocked without ATT-Apples meddling?

NBA Discussion / Sterns going to clean up flopping. Jason Terry.

Comes as no surprise, but Sterns promise to clean up NBA flopping has proven thus far to be a joke.
James Harden got the years 1st, this after having already received a *warning*.
I'm sure the 5K fine out of Hardens 20 million a year salary will really deter him.

But, did you catch the one by Jason Terry?   :)  No contact whatsoever and check out the fake fight afterwords:

NBA Discussion / Re: ziggy; Jacoby Ellsbury
« on: November 03, 2013, 10:38:01 AM »
Wolverine,
St Louis still one of if not the top organization in MLB when considering $$$ and market size.  What do they put in the water out there?
That having been said, what is the thinking of Redbird Nation coffee shop drinker re Wainrights 6th inning after retiring Nava to open?
This game had 2-1 one way or the other written all over it.  St Loius should have been treating it as their Game 7 (not that they weren't but...)
The Drew walk blew me away.
That St Louis manager then stuck with him for Ross and Ellsbury i do not get at all.

Do you still have your sports anchor gig?  Still in MN?
Groupies?

D Nava struck out swinging.   1   1
X Bogaerts singled to center.   1   1
S Drew walked, X Bogaerts to second.   1   1
D Ross hit a ground rule double to left, X Bogaerts scored, S Drew to third.   2   1
J Lester grounded out to pitcher.   2   1
J Ellsbury singled to center, S Drew scored, D Ross thrown out at home.

zig i do not know if you still use the email posted on this site.
I do not use mine, i shut it down.

At any rate, here's hoping Ellsburys foot heals in time for the playoffs.
Great year he and the Sox were and are having.  52-4 on stolen bases.

Game 6s Spurs rank #1 in all time playoff game chokes?
Does for me.

Miami played horribly in Game 6 too.

Failure to foul in the two point area and/or allow the three point attempt is so unfundamental.   I know Popazit is not the only coach who subscribes to the losing strategy of let em shoot the game tying three.

Live by the 3 die by the 3?  Wow!
Spurs Game 3 16 three pointers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LUH-y2pZ9o&feature=youtu.be

Parker questionable for Game 4.  He will play, the question is what percentage is he?
jn i don't want the Spurs going into self defeatist mode if Parker is out.  Play on, for goodness sake we just saw what Green and Gary Neal did.  This business that the Spurs have to mail it in if Parker is hobbled is bunk.

The Heat are a missed Parker last second shot from being up 2-1.  I hardly think this series is over.
But if the Spurs continue to play team ball.... :)  Legit 5th Championship here we come.

Greetings again jn.

Will be int to see if LeBron ends up, or for that matter starts out guarding Parker.
The rest should have done the Spurs wonders.  A healthy speedy Parker is completely different from an 80% Parker.

Tiimmy Duncs I'm counting of combining with Splitter to get the better of the Heat frontline.  Would not surprise me if Birdman tries some cheap crap again.  Altho i bet Pat Riley ripped him a new one after the joke that was Birdman in Game 6 Pacers.  Afterwords playing the victim role pretty much.  ::)  "I've just got to accept what the league did to me" etc.  However make no mistake and I'm sure you agree, Miami needs Birdman badly to provide a frontline D and rebounding.

Wade yeah he certainly has turned into a whining prima donna but yeah, his health (or not) is another key.
GNob vs Wade whether head to head or not, how these two do is another key.

Ray Allen is hot n cold as is Danny Green.  Will be another key imo.  They both hit huge momentum treys when they are on.  Allen was one of the main reasons the Celts choked vs The Marketers in 2010 (3-14 and 2-7 with mainly Derek Fisher guarding him  ;D )

Kawahi Leonard i absolutely love.  Hope the Spurs involve him in the O as well as D-ing up on LeBron.  He's very capable.

NBA Discussion / Nazrs foul and ejection vs Birdmans
« on: May 31, 2013, 11:58:34 AM »
This is gonna be interesting.
Have you seen them both?

What happens when player fouls a Heat guy, namely LeBron.
Vs Birdmans pathetic cheap sucker job on Hansbrough.  A 2nd time with the two handed shove.  Gee i thought that was auto Flag 2 and ejection.  Third time shoving back at the ref who went out of his way to separate Birdman and move him back to the bench.

Zig I'll be dadgummed if i can find this chart that i think you would have enjoyed.

It took height vs wingspan as the greatest percentage of increase.

For example a 6'1 player with a wingspan of 6'8" (freaky i know) has a higher percentage increase then a 6'8" guy with 6'10".
The top 10 increasers, some with huge wingspan, most all of them were not stars nor even close.
I know the Spurs Kawhii Leonard was in there, and i absolutely love his game and he is destined for stardom imo.
