NBA Discussion / Uh oh....Duncan might be out for the playoffs too!
« on: March 27, 2005, 09:14:20 PM »
One more thing.....I found this part to be interesting....

Quote
But without Duncan, you might see a team like Houston go to the Finals.

....Particularly because Houston is my dark horse. I went as far as to wager on them to win it all in Vegas in the beginning of the year. I knew they were in it to win it the moment the made the McGrady deal. And despite the slow start, they made deals to better the team and get rid of wasted salary cap space (See Mo Taylor...fuckin stupid-a$s Isiah  :nonono: ). Now I believe they do indeed have what it takes to go all they way. Defensive intensity will always be a staple of the Rockets play becuase of a certain glum-faced nerd roaming the sidelines, ready to chew your head off. And now this team has the offensive weapons in Sura, James, Barry, and Wesley to surround the 1-2 of T-mac and Yao.

Even though they didnt show up today against SA, one cant ignore the 20 point ass-whoopin they gave Phoenix (healthy...that is) before there bewildered sun-baked fans at AWA. Nor can you ignore what they have done recently to Seattle, Miami, Dallas, and Sacramento.

I think the only thing stopping this team is not having a healthy Juwan Howard....(Icant believe I just said that). But its ture....he rebounds on the defensive end and when his shots are actulally falling, which happens to be more often now, his presence stretches the defense to play man to man. This was why Houston has gotten so red hot. And I feel this is why they've cooled off lately.

However, come playoff time, I still feel my Vegas bet will finally payoff for once....(and its about freakin time)

Why?

Cause come playoff time, T-Mac will come up huge....just so he can "stick it" to his former boss in Orlando, GM John Wesibrod. Add a hungry-to-win superstar to this equation and you have a contender. Want examples.....see KG of last year, hugnry to get out of the first round and finally make a playoff run.

March 27, 2005

Credible people close to the San Antonio Spurs believe that Tim Duncan's ankle injury is more serious than the team is reporting. Duncan, they say, will be out until next season.

Memphis Commercial Appeal

And here in my neck of the woods.....the New York Daily News woke us up to this in the morning back pages.....

Tim & none

That's what Spurs' chances for title are if Duncan's out

From Seattle to Phoenix to Dallas, and in every Western Conference playoff town in between, team executives, players and coaches are on a Tim Duncan watch.

A week ago, Duncan severely sprained his right ankle and could be out for the rest of the regular season with ligament damage that may not fully heal until next season. His status for the playoffs, and how effective he can be in the postseason, is the most significant development in the West since the Lakers broke up their mini-dynasty last summer by trading Shaquille O'Neal to the Heat.

"The entire West changed dramatically with Shaq leaving the Lakers," said Seattle GM Rick Sund this past week. "If Duncan is not 100% when the playoffs start, it changes things in our conference in a big way. I've always felt that Phoenix was the best team out here, anyway, even before Duncan went down. But he is the most dominant player in the West . . . If he's not his normal self for the playoffs, then that gives everybody a legitimate shot to get to the Finals."

The loss of Duncan could be a huge break for the Sonics, who could finish with the No. 2 seed, even with Vladimir Radmanovic, their third-most important player, out for the rest of the regular season with a leg injury.

But the biggest winner could be Phoenix, which is looking at its first No. 1 seed since posting the best record overall in 1993. That would cap a remarkable turnaround. The Suns finished in the lottery last season after winning only 29 games.

"Tim is an obvious impact player and his absence could certainly affect the Western Conference playoff picture," said Bryan Colangelo, the Suns' GM. "The No. 1 seed has been our goal all along, and we have competed neck-and-neck with the Spurs all season. What we need to worry about, however, is that we stay sharp and focused and compete each night as if nothing has changed."

There hasn't been a Western Conference champion outside of the Lakers or San Antonio since Utah won the conference in 1998. Since then, the Lakers and Spurs have won five of the last six NBA championships, with Detroit finally ending the West's domination last June.

"I can't worry about how this will impact us for the playoffs, because I really don't know at this time," said Spurs executive VP-coach Gregg Popovich. "Tim's disappointed because he was starting to get on his roll. But he knows that is over with and he's got to start over. So he's got to start to change gears and has gotten into rehab mode."

The West could well come down to how Duncan's recovery goes between now and the start of the playoffs on April 23.

"The Spurs are one of the few exceptions in that if they have Duncan, it doesn't matter if they have the homecourt advantage," said Boston coach Doc Rivers. "They've got veterans, they've been together and they've won. But without Duncan, you might see a team like Houston go to the Finals. They've got two stars - Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming, one inside and one outside - and a ton of veterans who can shoot. I wouldn't be shocked to see them go far. Because without Duncan, the West now is actually a small conference and a speed conference."

And suddenly, a conference up for grabs.

NBA Discussion / Suns at Heat
« on: March 25, 2005, 08:30:10 PM »
Did somebody say the Suns are for real....the same team that lost to Golden State at home the other night?

The Suns are the Mavs of 2001....high scoring pansies that dont have enough up front and wont achieve anything come playoff time.........just like those 2001 Mavs.

About a week ago or so, the Rockets rolled into Phoenix and Yao of all people, made Amare and the Suns front court his bitches, nabbing 22 rebounds and  rejecting Amare 5 times to go along with 27 points.....simply put, dominating the game. This preformance by Yao helped Houston whip Phoenix like they havent been this season, losing by 20 at home.

If Yao can deficate on Amare's head, imagine what Shaq will do to the Suns front court tonight.

And remember, Miami can shoot the 3-ball just as well as Phoenix. So if Miami's shots are falling tonight...lookout. Its gonna get really ugly for Phoenix.

EDIT...And BTW, the real teams that are for "real" are those two other teams I talked about.

NBA Discussion / Van Gundy to penalize Rockets
« on: March 13, 2005, 04:30:32 PM »
Pss....Let me let you in on a little secret as to why his Rockets are all of a sudden a high scoring output machine.....

It all starts with defense. The man is not just a good defensive coach. He's a great defensive coach. T-Mac has apparently bought into this and he for one, is not getting burned half-assing it like he did last year in Orlando. I can vaguely remember one instance where he got burned repeatedly by Jamal Crawford last year when his them Magic squad got blown away by the Bulls....ESPN had a field day on T-mac with this. This year, that is not happening. Also, has anyone seen the play of Dikembe Mutombo of late. Under JVG, the guy looks like he's 20 all of a sudden, snatching rebounds and thwoing elbows. (Just Ask Lebron about that broken nose) This is the best I've seen Dikembe play in a long while. So dont give me this "players arent buying into JVG system" bull_.....cause they are.

The whole point of this is.......defense creates offense. When Housotn blew out Phoenix by 20 Friday night, they held the Suns to 17 points in the 4th. Yao's defense shut down Amare. These stops led to easy fast break points, which led to a 41 point 4th quarter for the Rockets. Want better....on Wednesday, the Rockets held the Sonics to an all-time low point figure in a quarter enroute to a huge win in Seattle. See what's going on here.....Defense is creating ofense.

And remember.....Defense wins championships.

NBA Discussion / NYC Dog
« on: March 12, 2005, 04:36:17 PM »
First off.....excuse me for being a WEEK late. Some really wierd things have been goin on lately.....like Yao grabbing 22 board last night...in the NBA, not overseas!?!

I'll keep this short and sweet since I'm on a crunch for time......

He wont be great, special, or anything like that in my opinion....but he has the tools and size to make an impact as a role player for any team. I'm really interested to see how he developes in SA, especially after his last few stints in ATL ans NY. When you play for a loser, its easy to lack in motivation, which can negatively effect their play. Now he's playing for a winner and contender.....this type of jump will motivate any player to bring his "A" game every night. With Nazr, I dont think anyone in the NBA has seen his "A" game to this point. Yet, he did stand out in ATL and NYC for his play. Imagine what playing in SA, with Duncan and Pop to pass on knowledge will do for his game.

I predict his stock will skyrocket from this point......

NBA Discussion / Clips might be evicted from Staples Center.
« on: October 14, 2004, 07:21:53 PM »
Its ironic that for the first time in a long time, W.O.W's favorite team, the Clippers, might actually have a better squad than the Lakers and yet, they are the ones possibly getting kicked out of Staples.

Its also kind of ironic that this comes on the heels of a flirtation with signing Kobe Bryant, who suggested he might sign with them if they moved to Anaheim, which is closer to his home. Now, they might actually have to move there, without Bryant that is.

Or could KC, STL or Vegas be there next stop?

Staples Could Boot Clippers
by Jerry Crowe
LA Times

The Clippers' days in Staples Center could be numbered.

Owner Donald T. Sterling's team might be jettisoned when its lease runs out after this season, the chief executive of the company that owns the arena said in an interview published Monday in the Los Angeles Downtown News.

"We actually could make more money if, instead of 40 Clippers games, we had five concerts," Tim Leiweke, president of the Anschutz Entertainment Group, was quoted as saying. "So, those are some of the decisions we're going to have to make. The Clippers' issue is in negotiations now. Their lease is up after this year.

"And ironically, shockingly, we've got to make a decision as to whether we even want them back. We're not sure."

The Clippers, who charge a fraction of what the Lakers charge for tickets, sold out six of 40 games in Staples Center last season, two against the Lakers.

NBA Discussion / Problems brewing in Nugs Land
« on: October 03, 2004, 11:25:44 AM »
First off, yeah I know this is from the NY Post....and even worse Peter Vescey BUT it has been confirmed by Nugs fans citing local radio in Denver.

Quote
An extra on the scene informs me Nene and Kenyon Martin, on opposite sides, had been battling for turf and respect for some time - neither is a center, thus the starting four spot is up for grabs. Meaning, they weren't about to keep their hands to themselves. The usual infuriating pushin' and shovin' ensued each time either one tried to establish inside position. Suddenly Martin reverted to brutal form of a few years ago. He spun around on Nene, recounted the eyewitness, and punched the 6-11, 260-pound Brazilian, hitting him square above one eye, opening up a gash that necessitated stitches. Teammates prevented further bloodshed. Temporarily. Nene is far too bad to the bone to let Martin get away with a sucker punch. *

NBA Discussion / Yao translates K-Mart's Chinese tattoo's as saying
« on: September 27, 2004, 07:14:27 PM »
Yao has been doing th whole "NY media tour" here lately to boost sales of his new memoir, "A Life In Two Worlds" He will be doing a book signing tomorrow, 1:00 PM at Barnes & Noble at Rockefeller Center and the NBA Store on Wednesday. Yesterday he was on Fox News. This morning, he was on Today. Wednesday, he will be on "Regis and Kelly." And sometime later on in the week, he is suposed to make an appearance on Letterman.

During this week, its become quite obvious that Yao is "Americanizing" as his English has gotten dramatically better.

And with that, has Yao also learned the American art of trash talking? View this quote from his book and decide for yourself.

Quote
. . . In his new book, Rockets center Yao Ming translates the Chinese script tattoos of Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin. "His letters mean, 'Not aggressive' or 'indecisive.' " Yao writes. "Anyone who has seen Kenyon play knows he isn't like that."

Link.....Scroll to bottom

According to Nugs fans, Kenyon jabbed back on local radio saying his tattoo's mean "never satisfied." He also questioned Yao's ability to comprehend to Chinese language and said Yao will get a better look at those tattoo's on his arm this season, as he runs him over on the way to a dunk.

Ohh, all this talk. The season starts in a month......I cant wait.
