Philadelphia 76ers / Re: Brand: Buyers remorse?
« on: February 17, 2009, 10:51:32 AM »
Sixerfan posted an update earlier saying we turned down an offer from Golden State which would have sent Miller and Rush to GS in exchange for Maggette and Marcus Williams.

Good.  The last thing we need is a long term commitment to a guy like Maggette who plays a position where we are already strong and a PG who is beyond useless at this point in his career.

plus if I recall correctly using the full MLE next summer, even if Miller leaves, would put us in or close to luxury tax territory.

If Miller walks they will be a couple Mil UNDER the cap.  They still would only have the MLE to use (and the smaller exemptions), but would be well under the tax.

Good, because it was your stuff I was trying to recall, with a distinct lack of clarity.  It will be interesting to see if FA salaries are depressed this summer because of the economy nad everyone waiting for 2010.  I expect a number of guys who are untradable now because of BYC issues to hit the trade market this summer, with Monta ellis being Exhibit 1.

I am increasngly thinking that Stefanski is gonna play "hardball" with Miller...he wants 4 years, and I can't possibly imagine we will give it to him.  We will offer Miller 3/30 and then dare him to take a 50%ish pay cut to be with his son.

I will kill many kittens if we sign Miller to 3/30.  We need to let him walk and go after somebody who fits this system better with the full MLE (Sessions or Bibby).  Miller + Brand doesn't work.  Brand isn't going anywhere.  So Miller has to.

The problem with this scenario is that I highly doubt Sessions or Bibby will be available for the MLE, plus if I recall correctly using the full MLE next summer, even if Miller leaves, would put us in or close to luxury tax territory.

As for Jem, he suddenly departed these waters right around the first of the year.  Apparently for the usual reasons, although it never seemed to get too bad in this particular piece of the overall forum (he had a large number of posts, way more than could possibly be related to this particular part of the forum).  I understand the decision, but I still miss having him post here. Ciest la vie.

I wouldn't mind a Sam jersey... as long as its not a Sixers one.  i'd kick in my part to get him to another team (and not the Canadian National.)

BK already kicked in his part with that @#*&%! trade kicker he gave him.  If it did not piss me off so much, the utter absurdness of it would be funny.

A Celtics fan who was also a transplanted LAC fan doesn't like Brand, big surprise there.  Simmons is funny, when it comes to actual analysis he is a bit of a douche.

Skates:

If we could sign Miller to a two-year deal with a 3rd year buyout, I would be on board.

If not, he needs to be gone.

Agreed, now somebody tell Ed what we have decided.   :D

At his point I'm almost hoping they resign Miller to a 2-3 year deal.

Sure it might be treading water, but if they don't make a trade its better than the alternative of seeing him walk.

I would be fine with him on a two year extended deal.  His contract would expire the same time as Sam, Reggie and Willie and before we spend big on Thad or Speights, plus it would give us two years to acquire a young PG and groom him as Miller's replacement.  Any longer than that and things start getting stickier.  Maybe two years with a buy-out on a third.

Ultimately I think it has more to do with talent then system.  Even if the Sixers could go far with a defensively triggered small running team (Like the Showtime Lakers when Worthy played some PF), the team needs more stars to be a contender.  I guess Speights and Thad could become stars, and Iguodala has all but arrived as a secondary star.... Brand was supposed to add the higher level star to the mix, but I'm not so sure anymore.

We will know much better next year, the shoulder should be fine and he will be the two full years out from the achilles that other athletes ahve said you really need.  On the other hand he will be a year older.

While I agree that the Sixers play better pressure D than the current Suns, Knicks and Warriors teams, they have problems against teams that protect the ball well and slow things down (think Detroit and Utah), plus as tk said, there is an overall prime talent gap between them and the elite teams at this point.  I think the sixers talent level is very high, but much of it is not ready for prime time talent this year.  One thing I like about the sixers young talent is that most of these guys have good heads on thier shoulders in addition to tons of ability.  The future of the PG spot still bewliders me however.

Dantoni, Marion, Diaw and soon Amare.

Don't forget about Raja  8)

I love how a determinant to the Shaq deal was to help them get past San Antonio in the playoffs.  What did that series go last year?  4-1 Spurs?  Their style of play w/ Mike D. did sort of come to a screeching halt in the playoffs, but I'm not sure that less drastic additions/revisions to the roster couldn't have sufficed and kept them in contention, rather than Kerr ripping their identity out entirely.

To Shaq's credit, he's actually playing better this year than most anticipated giving his age and injury concerns, but nonetheless the team has deviated from their winning ways and their success this season is a far cry from what it was.

it goes to show how tricky it is to make the move from a "gimmick" team to a complete one.  The Sixers ran into a mini-version of that this year with Brand.  Look at the Showtime Lakers, the Sixers with Moses, etc., it is quite possible to structure a team with a deadly fast break and a go-to big man who helps in the half court.  I worry that the go-go Sixers of today are seen as the way they need to win, when I don't see their system taking them far into the playoffs.  They need to keep working to get the right mix of players so that they can play at any pace and be truly successful.

I think the biggest incompatibility is between Brand and Miller.  Miller is really good at fitting the ball into tight spaces or throwing the alley-oop.  He's really NOT good at making a quick pass to an open cutter.  I notice a few times every game where a guy is wide open and Miller just can't get him the ball (whereas Iggy and Williams have shown that ability at times).  Brand loves the pick and roll, Miller can't run it.  I'm taking the wait and see approach.

The reason I see Sammy as more incompatible with Brand is because Miller can give the ball up to another player to pick and roll/pop with Brand on the other side of the floor, while Sam seems to have no idea what to do with himself when Brand is around.  You are right though, Miller's skill set does not compliment Brand very well.

Well, watching the Suns is like watching the end of the Barkely and Iverson eras in Philly, only with more talent.  Stoudemire is basically pulling a Vince Carter act and the team needs rebuilt, although they have some decent talent to rebuild around.

The Sixers looked very good against the Suns tonight, beating them at the punch each time.  The Suns are tired and out of sorts, but this was the kind of step on their neck game I have been wanting to see out of this team.  Too many times we let teams like this climb back into the game and win it with a last second shot.

The talent on this team is considerable, but they still aren't getting past the second round of the playoffs this year.  They are probably moving towards keeping Miller, which I think is a mistake in the long run.  Sammy has been really effective lately at playing D against other big men, I bitch when he stinks out there, so I have to hand it to him when he has become valuable again.  I think the biggest incompatiility on this team when Brand is around is between he and Sammy.  Sammy is at his best when he is the only real big man out there, although that won't do us any good if we want to be real contenders at some point.

BTW, in the Phillyfan league, I'm on track to lose 9-0 head to head against the worlds biggest Willie Green fan...  I believe the word I'm looking for is ignominy :-[

He has been churning his roster like it's playoff time, he is who I picked Kirilenko up from.  I think all of the drops he's making in a deep league will come back to bite him later.

I grabbed Sessions off of the scrap heap in our Philaphans fantasy league last week and scooped up Kirilenko off the waiver wire today.  Hopefully, Kirilenko is really going to be back shortly after the break, my bigs need a lot of help.  Sessions was a big late season pick-up for me last year, with Ridnour and Bogut, he and Charlie V are really racking up the stats.  It doesn't hurt that they are FA this summer.
