NBA Discussion / So is Marc Gasol still a scrub?
« on: April 27, 2011, 03:42:51 PM »
Just a few stats:

Currently holding Tim Duncan to his lowest point total in a series for his entire career (12.8)

Has shown he can score (25 in game 1) and rebound with the best of em (17 in game 2)

Is a major factor, along with Zach Randolph, as to why the Grizz are getting ready to pull off a one of the biggest upsets in NBA history.

Still considered a scrub?

NBA Discussion / Will I Turn Into JoMaL Light?

"Among the names filed for according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office's website were: Anaheim Royals, Anaheim Royals of Southern California, Orange County Royals and Los Angeles Royals. The filing was made March 3 by attorney Scott Hervey on behalf of the Crickets Corp., a Nevada-based company."

The Lakers will always be my #1 team but I work just a hare over two miles away from both Anaheim stadiums.  Can't say that I wouldn't jump at the chance to go to a lot of 'Anaheim Royals' games depending on who they happen to be playing.  Especially when you factor in so much talent going to the east it is nice to have three chances to see the Heat, Knicks, Magic, Celtics, etc.  Plus the Lakers driving to me instead of me driving to them two times a year  :D

NBA Discussion / Scorecasting Tackles Sports Myths
« on: January 27, 2011, 03:13:12 PM »
Interesting article I thought I would pass on.

http://www.wired.com/playbook/2011/01/qa-scorecasting/

Here is a quick portion of it:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wired.com: So why does the home team win more often?

Wertheim: What?s really interesting is how consistent that truism is. The WNBA has almost the exact same home winning percentage as the NBA. A soccer league in Central America is almost the same as the Premier League. Japanese baseball has almost the same as MLB.

Before you even dig into the ?why?? of home-field advantage, you see the data that 100 years ago the home winning percentage in Major League Baseball was almost exactly the same as it is today, and you find the same in other sports.

NBA Discussion / Should Lamar Odom make the all star team?
« on: December 21, 2010, 05:23:55 PM »
Where do you personally draw the line when a player is playing well but is also on a team that will have 2 starters already going?  A few years ago we had 4 guys from the Pistons on the team so I was curious if you guys think he should get in or if you think he should get left off because the Lakers already have 2 guys going.  Or should he be left off for another guy from SA (Manu/Parker) since they are playing the best ball in the conference currently ?

His stats this year so far:

16 points per game
10 rebounds
3 assists
1 block
58% from the field

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/13/donald-sterling-baron-davis_n_795922.html

Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling has been taunting his own point guard Baron Davis from his courtside seats during games, according to Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports.

"Why are you in the game?" Sterling was said to have shouted. "Why did you take that shot? You're out of shape!"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am debating on buying Clippers tickets near Donald Sterling so I can taunt him during the game....

"Why are you a slum lord?" "Why don't you ever spend money on this team and always run out free agents?" "Why has the culture you put in place in this organization one of a loser?" "Do you think you and Al Davis can go commit suicide together?"

NBA Discussion / Derrick Rose is amazing.
« on: November 24, 2010, 12:13:33 PM »
Where would you guys rank him in terms of point guards in the league?   Is he top 5?  IHe currently is averaging 25 ppg, 8 assist, and 4 rebounds shooting 47% from the field.

Not that everyone doesn't already know what I stated in the title but I was at the Laker / Bulls game last night and it is amazing to see him in person.  His ability to get to the rim and move his body to wrap himself around multiple defenders into tight spots to get the ball on the glass is top notch.     Here is a shot from my seat last night, 4 rows up.  http://tinypic.com/r/jkgg41/7

The more and more he talks, the more and more of a hole he digs himself into.

NBA Discussion / Where do you think Melo is going to end up?
« on: September 19, 2010, 02:11:56 PM »
Melo leaving Denver is a sure thing at this point.  Whether the Nuggets trade him to get something in return or he leaves once his contract is up he won't be in Colorado by next summer.  Where do you think he will end up?

The list of cities in the running so far:

Chicago
New York
Philly

Both Chicago and Philly could offer up solid young players (Noah or Andre) for Carmelo.  New York doesn't quite have as much talent to send but they do have Amare Stoudamire and he has roots in the state.  He played college ball in New York and both Melo and his wife are from New York.

Thoughts/Predictions?

NBA Discussion / Wired.com: Basketball brain trauma sees sharp rise
« on: September 14, 2010, 02:31:28 PM »
http://www.wired.com/playbook/2010/09/basketball-brain-trauma/

"According to researchers at Nationwide Children?s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, each year from 1997 through 2007 saw an average of 375,350 basketball-related emergency room visits among children ages 5 to 19. The most common ailments, the team found, involved common sprains and strains to the legs, knees, and ankles. Fractures were more common for the upper extremities, as well as dislocations.

Thought it was good for a cheap laugh for all of us on the board and yes it is safe for work

Tom Haberstroh over at ESPN.com has an article over on the ESPN INsider portion of their site saying that Carmelo is not worth a max contract and he is not an elite player.  His argument that even though Carmelo has scored 20 points a game every single season since he was drafted and was 3rd youngest to 10k (only other two guys didn't goto college Kobe/Bron) that he does not deserve to be mentioned along Dwayne Wade, Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, and Paul Pierce.

Do you agree or disagree?

13
Has Lebron James' brand taken a major hit this summer in your eyes?

I pose this question to the board because the consensus on sports talk radio seems to be that it did in fact take a major hit.  Between the series with the Celtics and the poorly executed announcement to play in South Beach many are saying that LRMR took a bullet proof brand and put holes on it.  What is your take on this?  Has Lebron's brand in your eyes been tarnished?

The Lakers off-season has been just as active as anyone and was wondering what you guys think of the Lakers moves for:

Re-signing Fisher
Grabbing Steve Blake as his back up

Then signing Theo Ratliff (Gasol/Bynum backup) and Matt Barnes (Artest/Bryant backup depending on matchups)

Obviously we are very happy that our team kicked it up a notch to defend our title but wanted the opinion of non-Laker fans on how they think this has gone.

A lot of profanity so NSFW but it is a pretty entertaining rant about Knicks fans, their reaction to Lebron James not showing up, and the idea NY is a big stage for basketball.
