Philadelphia 76ers / Al Jefferson on the block?
« on: January 08, 2010, 05:22:46 PM »
From ESPN's Rumor Central:

Quote
With Minnesota floundering along at a 7-29 record, there's word Al Jefferson may be on the trading block, as there are questions about where he fits into new coach Kurt Rambis' triangle offense and with fellow big-man Kevin Love.

But ESPN's Marc Stein isn't getting the impression the Wolves are interested in trading Jefferson.

Yet, if Jefferson were to become available at all, a couple teams needing frontline help, including the Bulls and Trail Blazers, could come calling.

Normally, I wouldn't jump out at any rumor, but it did get me thinking: would you trade Iggy for Jefferson?  A second deal would almost hafta be made for a SG/SF type (Speights would become a spare piece that could be used as bait), but you would have a starting lineup of AI-Lou-Thad-Jeff-Brand with Dalembert getting his 24ish minutes off the bench, Thad getting to play his position and his position only, and it would open a lot of minutes for Holiday (and Green, but I'm trying to think positive here).  I'm not sure I would do it or who would say first, really just a thought experiment.

Philadelphia 76ers / Going to a Sixers game
« on: November 27, 2009, 10:54:52 PM »
Tickets: $24 (Two $10 seats plus tax/charge)
Parking: $15 (Plus VIP parking because my Dad drives a Lexus in a promotion I don't really understand)

And where did we sit? Well, lower level half court because nobody checks tickets and there's plenty of open seats.  A good deal except for that whole "you hafta watch the Sixers play basketball" bit.

If a basketball game is played and nobody watches it, does it still count?

Philadelphia 76ers / UDFA/Summer League Roster Discussion
« on: June 26, 2009, 07:06:58 AM »
Figured I'd make a topic about this since we still have plenty of space on our roster and it's likely we bring in a few guys with a legit shot to make the team.  One name that stood out to me that didn't get drafted was Dionte Christmas.  I'd imagine we'd get him if we had any interest.  Anybody else good to slip through the draft?

Philadelphia 76ers / Sixers select Jrue Holiday at #17

Figured I'd separate this from the general draft thread.  Post thoughts, opinions, scouting reports, front office comments, etc. in here.

Philadelphia 76ers / Great article on the use of full court press

Okay, so it's not TOTALLY about the full court press.  But it got me thinking: What would happen if an NBA team just brought in a whole bunch of 6'4-6'9 athletes and tried this?  For the sake of example, imagine, say, Iggy, Thad, Rod Carney, Sam Young, and Elton Brand as the "center" playing full court press.  It would be the defensive version of the SSOL offense.  And there would always be mismatches on offense.  And it would be really fun to watch.  Not necessarily saying the Sixers should try it, but for a perennial basement dwellar, I don't see why not.

No Howard, no Lee.  If we don't force a game 7, Tony DiLeo shouldn't be allowed to leave the Wac without being fired.

Philadelphia 76ers / Game 5: Sixers at Magic: Who's the hero tonight?
« on: April 28, 2009, 08:34:49 AM »
I expect yet another close game.  Don't know which team will be the one needing a hero, but here's hoping we pull it out.

Do we go up 2-1 tomorrow?  Do we stop the unstoppable tandem of Courtney Lee and Anthony Johnson?  Do we suddenly remember how to shoot FTs?  Does Willie Green sprain an ankle trying to use the bathroom much to the glee of everybody but Willie Green?  All questions to be answered soon!

Philadelphia 76ers / Andre Iguodala: Top 10 player in the NBA?
« on: April 22, 2009, 04:41:15 PM »
I use colons too much in my topic titles, deal with it.  From Truehoop:

Quote
Kevin Pelton of Basketball Prospectus, writing for ESPN Insider about Andre Iguodala: "The other area where Iguodala shines when we look deeper at the statistics is a familiar one: defense. Again, Iguodala has the traditional stats, having averaged 1.6 steals per game to rank 10th in the league. What that fails to capture is Iguodala's ability to contain his own man. According to 82games.com, opposing small forwards averaged 16.5 points per 48 minutes and a .492 effective field-goal percentage against the 76ers when Igudoala was playing the position this season, as compared to 20.2 points per 48 minutes and a .495 eFG for all small forwards in the NBA this season. Basketball Prospectus' defensive statistics also show Iguodala holding opponents 4.7 percent below their normal production -- virtually identical to Battier's performance. Again, Iguodala has been slow in getting recognition for his defense, drawing only a single vote for last year's All-Defensive teams. But using the same methods to adjust plus-minus data that Michael Lewis drew upon in his Battier profile, statistical analysis shows Igudoala to be an elite defender. His defensive adjusted plus-minus last season, as calculated by current Rockets consultant Eli Witus, was tops among wing players. While adjusted numbers are not yet available for this season, Philadelphia allowed 7.4 fewer points per 100 possessions when Iguodala was on the court. Largely because of his defensive presence, Iguodala has been one of this year's standouts in terms of the adjusted plus-minus calculated by BasketballValue.com, one of seven players in the league worth more than 10 points per 100 possessions to their team."

I can c+p the rest of the article, but it's on Insider, and I don't know what D-Bods' rule on posting full pay content on here is.  Pelton mentions him as worthy of All-NBA discussion and a top player according to any advanced metric that includes defense.  Thought it was interesting that while Iguodala often doesn't pass the "look" test, he is a guy that stats love.  Kinda like the anti-Ryan Howard.

A few thoughts going into the game:

Fronting Howard with Speights may be a strategy worth considering.  Ratliff tried hard but got killed for the most part.  But we all know that Speights has no chance one on one with Howard.  Maybe Speights' athleticism can help.

The biggest difference between Andre Iguodala and other top-flight wing scorers (Lebron, Kobe, Pierce, etc.) is that Iguodala gets to the line less.  A lot less.  It's not that he can't, he just doesn't.  Iguodala needs to drive hard to the hoop and force Howard to either foul him or leave his man so Iguodala has an easy pass for a dunk down low.

We need to push the tempo even more.  The Magic were clearly not ready to play as fast as we were, especially when we went to the Williams/Miller/Iggy lineup that could push the ball up the floor rapidly.

I don't know if anybody's seen it, but there's a new Sixers blog that was made for the ESPN Truehoop Network, and it's definitely worth checking out:  http://philadunkia.com/ There's a lot of good stuff there, and it's updated way more often than I thought it would be.
