NBA Discussion / WTF? The Lakers suck balls!
« on: December 13, 2012, 09:26:38 PM »
I have yet to actually watch more than a quarter of Lakers b-ball, but everything I see and read says th Lakers are horrid. What is going on? I thought they would struggle a bit out of the gate while they learned to play as a team.  Also figured they would struggle without Nash and while learning the new system. I had no idea it would be this bad, it's like the first year after Magic retied or the year after trading away Shaq.  I don't understand how a team with so much talent can suck so bad, they are contantly getting run off the floor, what gives? How does this Lakers team battle the Spurs down to the wire then get punked by the Cavs?

Anybody watching their games have any answers?

NBA Discussion / Tim Duncan salary cut more than 50%

All I can say is WOW!

People like TD don't come around very often, especially in professional sports. What an amazing gesture on his part to help his team. I know others have taken pay cuts in the past but nothing close to the massive cut TD volunteered to take.

NBA Discussion / Is Pat Riley the GOAT?
« on: July 12, 2012, 10:36:22 AM »
My favorite coach of all time, IMO the greatest coach of all time, all due respect to Chuck Dailey, Larry Brown, Rivers, and Pop. Have no idea about coaches pre-1985 so my opinion could be off.

Now Riley is becomming the greatest GM/Coach ever! As a pure GM, "The Logo" is the GOAT, but as far as a guy who has been sucessful in both positions, Riley is unequaled IMO. He pulled off the Shaq robbery from the Lakers that got Miami a title, although technically the Lakers did parlay the Shaq trade in to two championships. Then Riley reloads the Heat with LeBron and Bosh for another title by being the closer at the pitch meeting. Now Riley is convincing great talent to hop on board the championship express and take a reduced role along with a reduced paycheck.

My Laker bias has just reawakened and informed me tha Mitch has actually done better, he has just as many titles and never let the Lakers drop to the lows that Miami has hit. While it may make Mitch a better GM, I don't think Mitch is the closer that Riley has shown to be recently, if he was Dwight would be a Laker already or Bynum wouldn't have the "I don't care if I'm a "Laker" attitude. Plus Mitch can't take the reigns of the team once he realizes Mike Brown is a horrible coach.

NBA Discussion / Ex-Laker arrested for murder at Orange County airport

(CNN) -- Former NBA guard Javaris Crittenton was arrested Monday night at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, the FBI said.

Crittenton is accused of murder in the death of a mother in Atlanta.

Crittenton was about to get on a flight to Atlanta when he was apprehended by federal agents and police, said Laura Eimiller, a spokeswoman for the FBI Los Angeles field office.

Crittenton, 23, faces murder charges in Atlanta in connection with the shooting death of 22-year-old Julian Jones, Atlanta police have said.

Jones was killed during a drive-by shooting August 19.

Crittenton, who played for Georgia Tech before going pro, was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2007 and then traded to the Memphis Grizzlies.

He was picked up by the Washington Wizards in December 2008 but was suspended and later released by the NBA in 2010 after a gun-related incident involving teammate Gilbert Arenas.

Too bad the guy did not get a chance to live up too his potential.  IMO he should have avoided playing for China in the off-season.

A few people at work are talking about it through second hand experience and I was wondering if anybody has actually used it.  I have read a few articles about it but since its invite only I haven't been able to check it out.

NBA Discussion / Way to go Mavs!!!
« on: June 12, 2011, 09:44:42 PM »
The Diggler deserves a ring 10X more than LeFraud Shames aka King Coat Tail Rider.  So much for 7 rings in a row for Miami.

NBA Discussion / Miami vs Dallas, a series of cat and mouse.
« on: June 03, 2011, 10:10:00 AM »
I really thought Miami would waltz through this series unless the Mavs caught fire. The Mavs have not been lighting it up like they did in the WC because of Miami's perimeter D but they fought through it and are looking like a true contendor. I stil think Miami should dominate the series but when a jumpshooting team gets hot there is not much you can do except hope they cool off.

Looked to me like the mouse got away and stole the cheese to boot.

NBA Discussion / Shaq-Fu! The big Diesel is hanging them up.
« on: June 03, 2011, 10:02:45 AM »
Shaq is the most amazing player I have ever seen. The man was a beast in his prime. He is the only player I have seen dominate both ends of the court, Dream was the closest followed by Duncan. I've seen guys like Jordan, Magic, Bird, Kobe, Wade, and now Dirk dominate an entire team defense, I have even seen guys like Jordan and Kobe defensively dominate a single player but I have never seen a guy dominate an entire team offensively and defensively the way Shaq did in his prime. Granted I never really got to see guys like Kareem, Russel, Wilt, Moses,or Walton in their prime so Shaq may not be the most dominant, and like I said, Dream came very close but Shaq practically "punked" entire teams.

Shaq was awesome and I feel fortunate to have seen a "once in a lifetime" big man in his prime.

NBA Discussion / No talk about the Magic trade?
« on: December 30, 2010, 10:00:07 AM »
I thought it was a great trade in terms of talent for the Magic but I don't know how well the Magic will do with such a thin front line.  The Magic were going to finish no better than 3rd in the EC, Boston is clearly #1 and the Heat would eventually come around and become the 2nd best team in the East.  While this trade may not make a difference in the end for the Magic, at least this new team gives them a shot at finishing better than 3rd.  If Agent Zero is back the Magic could definately take out the Heat but I really don't think anyone in the East can beat Boston.

I think the only team that can beat Boston is the Lakers but I don't know if the Lakers can beat the Spurs and Mavs.  I think this is the best Lakers team in terms of talent since the Kobe/Shaq/Grant squad, but the Spurs and Mavs are so good that they have an excellent shot at winning the West.  While the Spurs and Mavs can beat the Lakers neither team has the defense to beat Boston.  With Kobe/Artest/Barnes the Lakers have the ability to control the SF/SG/PG positions and Bynum can more than hold his own at C.  Neither the Spurs or Mavs can say they have a shot at guarding 4 of the Boston positions with some success.  IMO the Lakers and Spurs have a better shot at beating each other than they do at beating Dallas.  For some reason I just get the feeling that the Mavs are built to beat the Spurs, and if you can beat the Spurs then you can beat the Lakers cause they are somewhat similar.  The Mavs are just a matchup nightmare and they have just enough bodies on defense in Chandler and Marion to hold their own in the playoffs.  I think both conferences are going to be fantastic in the playoffs.

Saw it today with my kids.  I usually like the HP movies but this movie kind of sucked.  I got the impression I was watching the longest movie trailer EVER!!!.  The movie seemed like a big set-up for the next one.  Nothing really developed after the first 30-40 minutes, just the same old same old.  The movie is visually stunning and some of the fight sequences are nuts on but overall I would give it a B-

Shaq Shows He Can Still Dominate Around Basket Of Fries
November 25, 2010 | ISSUE 46?47

02.07.08 BOSTON?In an impressive display of physical prowess, gutsy determination, and insatiable hunger, Celtics center Shaquille O'Neal proved all his doubters wrong Wednesday when the 38-year-old showed that he was still one of the most dominant big men around the basket of fries.  O'Neal, who repeatedly demonstrated that his skills, quickness, and explosive power had not declined with age, was unstoppable whenever he came near the basket of fries. The 15-time NBA All-Star made his bruising presence felt for a full 48 minutes, as he used his massive 325-pound frame to drive hard to the basket and dunk the fries spectacularly into the ketchup.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers said the 7-foot-1 center showed remarkable passion, screaming at opponents and throwing elbows in order to clear out the area in front of the basket of fries.  "Tonight he was a real difference-maker, using his bulk and superior strength to box people out and overpower guys," Rivers told reporters after a postgame meal, adding that the area around the basket of fries was still O'Neal's comfort zone. "Some people say that he's slowed down over the years, but he showed some real lateral quickness when he was defending his basket. He must have snagged about a dozen fries that I thought were out of his reach."
"He sent a clear message to the league tonight," Rivers added. "If you get close to that basket of fries, Shaq can still make you pay."

Throughout the night, O'Neal displayed a variety of effective moves reminiscent of his early days with the Orlando Magic. Using head fakes and spins to get to the basket, the seven-footer chased down every loose fry, and at one point broke the rim of the basket.  O'Neal relied on his huge hands to grab 18 rebounds after he missed several attempts to stuff fries into the hole, and displayed flashes of his old quickness by repeatedly scoring fries in bunches.  The big man even defied the perception that he's become a less mobile, primarily inside force by executing a backdoor play in which he glided through traffic, looped around the back, and went hard through an open drive-thru lane, collecting an extra half dozen baskets of fries in the process.  "He turned back the clock, that's for sure," TNT basketball analyst David Aldridge said on Inside The NBA. "I haven't seen Shaq put on a display like that since he jammed down 12 consecutive Supersize fries in the McDonald's near Madison Square Garden in 1998. He always did shine on the biggest of stages."

Shooting guard Ray Allen was reportedly impressed by the way O'Neal aggressively attacked the basket of fries from both sides of the rim. According to Allen, O'Neal maintained his focus the entire night, opting never to take a breather and fighting through periods of obvious pain.  "Shaq was really in the zone tonight," Allen told reporters, adding that he was impressed with O'Neal's amazing food court vision. "He's so strong it was like nothing was going to stop him. He fought hard for every last fry."  "And yet he really has a soft touch around the basket," Allen continued. "He's such a great finisher."

Portland Trail Blazers power forward LaMarcus Aldridge acknowledged that O'Neal took advantage of size-mismatches, fiercely guarding and controlling the area around the basket of fries by shielding it with his body and delivering a number of powerful blocks.  "When Shaq gets that hungry look in his eye, you know there's no way he's letting anyone near the basket," Aldridge said. "Anytime I got even close to a fry he laid me out cold."

Though O'Neal had one of his best showings of the season, Celtics sources said that forward Kevin Garnett was upset with O'Neal, claiming that "Big Shamrock" missed a number of opportunities to feed him a fry down low. Moreover, while Garnett said O'Neal passed the salt efficiently, he noted that the 2000 NBA MVP did turn over his soft drink several times.  Garnett acknowledged that he respects O'Neal's persistence and effort, however, and said tonight's display was clearly that of a man on a mission.  "Shaq's already got four onion rings on his fingers, but he still wants to get one more for the thumb," Garnett said. "And you know what? Tonight he showed he's going to do whatever it takes to get a whole handful of onion rings. Whatever it takes."

O'Neal later stunned his teammates with a last second bucket of chicken.
