NBA Discussion / LAL vs. LAC
« on: March 14, 2013, 04:50:12 AM »
Hey, y'all!
As as Tinseltown resident, many of the talk-shows that are broadcast nationwide are familiar to me since they emanate from here. One of the favorite topics of discussion on these shows is whether LA is the Clippers' or Lakers' town. To me, this is a laughable non-issue...'Lob City' ain't won nuttin' yet!

NBA Discussion / Why the hate/disrespect for LeBron?
« on: March 01, 2013, 11:42:56 AM »
Hey, y'all:
I have a hard time with all of the criticism that is leveled at LeBron, despite all of his athletic prowess and accomplishments. What's up with that? It is so reminiscent of the era that the 'Big Aristotle' dominated when he was in in his prime...no matter what, he can't do right. :\

General Discussion / Checking in

Howdy, y'all!

It has been a long time since I accessed this board - so many life changes have occurred that intervened in my particpation here. Even now at 4AM in Cali I feel pressure...not what I expected out of life at age 57. Youngbloods, enjoy every second...after 50, it's all downhill. Seriously, take heed - just being real :l

NBA Discussion / Is Dirk the greatest foreign-born player ever?
« on: May 06, 2011, 11:54:04 AM »
Hey y'all:

There is some question about the recognition of Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks as being one of the NBA's all-time great players. While his numbers quite apparently bear this out, due to his lack of rings he is not recognized as such by many pundits. IMO, here are the rankings in 2 different categories:

10 greatest players without a championship ring (since 1980...sorry, Pistol Pete):

Karl Malone
Dominique Wilkins
Patrick Ewing
John Stockton
Charles Barkley
Dirk Nowitzki
Mark Price
Kevin Johnson
Jason Kidd
Alonzo Mourning

10 greatest foreign-born players:

Tim Duncan
Dirk Nowitzki
Patrick Ewing
Steve Nash
Detlef Schrempf
Sarunas Marciullionis
Drazen Petrovic
Tony Parker
Vlade 'Divotz' (Chickie Baby...snif)
Peja Stojakovic

I did this off of the top of my head with no stats look-up...strictly on my recall of their performance. I'm sure that I have overlooked someone. Due to the rep of foreign players as being 'soft', I thought there might be a strong correlation with their lack of rings...my list tends to bear this out.

Lakers will get whisked.

NBA Discussion / That was Magic, auight
« on: April 25, 2011, 08:28:17 AM »
Hey, y'all:

Dwight Howard had the most invisible 29 points, 17 rebound perfomance I can recall in recent years. The Magic (and Van Gundy) are done.

Turkoglu was pitiful.

NBA Discussion / NBA landscape facing major changes
« on: February 25, 2011, 11:27:16 AM »
Hey y'all!

Sports fans everywhere have been inundated with doomsday scenarios with regard to the CBA rift between NFL players and owners. These are relatively minuscule and insignificant when compared to the CBA Ragnarok that the NBA is facing like a deer in headlights (and if you've ever seen the aftermath of a deer vs automobile collision, you know it's not pretty for either party...right jn?). I was listening to an account of why the Knicks can't possibly get Chris Paul to complete their 'superstar triumvirate', due to the absolute certainty of a hard salary cap ($60M/yr  was the figure that was bandied about) being imposed in the next CBA. Look what happened to the NHL once the owners got real...it's coming, folks. And, there's lots of other icebergs out there...hazardous conditions ahead.

NBA Discussion / An impostor?
« on: February 23, 2011, 08:58:20 AM »
Hey now!

Who's this 'Renaldo Balkman'? I laughed so hard I almost fell off of my dinosaur when I saw he was one of the elements of the 'Melo trade to the Knicks, to invoke a time honored S.F. Valley saying.

NBA Discussion / Kodachrome 94x47?
« on: January 21, 2011, 10:17:18 PM »
.Hey y'all!

What do you think of the impending Boise State~like trend at the college level to have the home team's floor decked out in its colors? This is coming as sure as death and taxes with a different twist to the NBA...I can just picture it now, a court~length Pepsi logo replacing the traditional outfitting.  The potential revenue windfall cannot be resisted by Stern and the owners. Sometimes, my thoughts even frighten me!

NBA Discussion / Kobe Pelosi
« on: January 14, 2011, 10:59:25 AM »
Hey y'all!

As I reflect on how my disinterest in the fortunes of the LAL (and thereby the NBA in general for quite a while due to life issues) developed over time, I realize that my tendency to 'blame it all on the Mamba' is unfair. Why is Kobe so hated, such a polarizing figure amongst the NBA fan base ever? None 'a y'all will believe what follows...

(1) He's a winner, and has been pretty much since the inception of his NBA career. America prefers the story line in which after much struggle, through effort and perserverance the protagonist achieves the goals he/she sought. We do not give consistent, perennial achievers much love, e.g. Yankees, Patriots, SA, Federer, and so on ~ that's just how it is here in the good ol' Hew~Hess~Hay.

(2) He is perceived to be (and rightly so, IMHO) to be the epitome of the self~absorbed, me~only superstar of the times. This is assuredly a byproduct of (1) above, but it is what it is, as Belichick would mumble.

(3) He has never asked publicly for forgiveness for his actions (still the source of various and sundry speculation) that led to his legfal troubles in CO and further rejection by the Laker~hating base (thanks WoW). A redemption story is not complete without replete devastating consequences on the subject's life appearing to be overcome (or not ~ see the story of 'Golden Voice' radio personality Ted  Williams).

Gotta go...more later.

General Discussion / Am I blind, or just lacking in discernment?
« on: January 12, 2011, 10:41:09 PM »
The furor surrounding the tragic Tuscon shootings concerning the political rhetoric that is so casually tossed around today now is now in focus (in the gunsights?) on media darling Sarah Palin. Even though I am in the totally opposite end of the spectrum in my views to those of 'Tea Party' sympathizers, I like to think I am open~minded enough to give any reasonable discourse a listen. However, as far as the mentally vacant Palin is concerned, I am truly at a loss to understand vwhy she garners so much attention other than for the basest of reasons. How have I arrived at this conclusion?  When my money~pit house was still in major remodel mode in 2008, I heartd some of the construction workers there discussing the presidential election candidates. GTo a man, the only reasaon why they paid anyattention at all to Palin was "She's  a babe!"  Huh? Perfectly qualified on that alone to be Prezdog?  O...m...G, I fear for the U.S. ~ the apcalypse is drawing ever nearer, for certain,

General Discussion / Reality ~ JS7 will dominate in '11
« on: January 10, 2011, 12:11:51 PM »
Hey, Supercross fans!  :)

Reality, I saw your post over at TransworldMX ~ I did not know that you were moto!  I am as old~school motocross as it gets here in sunny So. Calif., having been riding in the foothills of the northwest SFV since the late 1960's...I'm semi~retired from racing myself, due to a horrendous crash I took on my CRF450 at Piru a while back in 2002 ~ but I am still a huge Bubba fan, as you seem to be yourself.  Knuckles up, James!

NBA Discussion / Mavs do the job
« on: April 26, 2007, 11:55:25 AM »
Hey y'all!

One of the strangest reversals of dominance has been exhibited in the last few years by the Don Nelson-coached Golden State Warriors and the Avery Johnson-led Dallas Mavericks.  The Mavericks have generally kicked boot on everyone for the last couple of years - except GS.  I think I saw on some TNT graphic that up until last night, the Mavs were 2-8 vs. the Warriors of late.  To the (admittedly less than ultimately knowledgeable) fan, it does not seem possible from what appearances are.  What is up here?

NOTE:  I love HD!

I think that the Warriors are not being given credit for the defense they were playing.  By occupying the passing lanes almost perfectly,They forced Dallas into jump-shooting mode, and they couldn't hit.

This strategy would have worked in game 2, except for two Mavs players that brought their 'A' games with them, Devin Harris and Josh Howard.  Devin Harris is the quickest player I have seen for his size since Travis Best first entered the league with the Pacers.  And, he has the ability to drive to the hole where there doesn't seem to be any room for him to do so.  Howard reminds me of a young Scottie Pippen - like Pippen when he was young, he too (as well a Harris) needs to develop his outside shot to complete his game.

Harris repeatedly broke down the Warrior interior defense on dribble-drives (Chickie baby - snif...) to the basket, and almost single-handedly broke the GS defense down to where it could no longer impose the midrange shot limitation on Dallas.  Not only that, he took some charges (and was on the losing end of a rather egregious blocking foul that sent Cuban into paroxyzms of disbelief) and played hard-nosed 'D' like he meant it!  Jason Terry, take note...

GS really lost the game when they let their emotions get away from them...it was ovah after that.

Nowitzki was about as invisible as a 'superstar' scoring 23 can be.  No defensive contribution at all.
